His own personal story is described in his New York Times best-selling book "Man in the Middle" – it chronicles an extraordinary journey from self-described seventeen year old "fat kid" to NBA stardom in six short years.
When asked if there was a theme that runs through his speaking engagements, John replied that he tried to impress on his audiences that "the most improbable of people, in the most unlikely of places can become extraordinary."
